Lauren Careese Alexander
b. Dallas, Texas 2000
Lauren Careese Alexander is currently an MFA candidate at Southern Methodist University (SMU). She graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2021 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art focused on ceramics and painting. She received her Associate of Arts degree in 2018 from Navarro College in Waxahachie during her final year of High School.
Lauren is a mixed-media artist focused on piecing together fragmented memories to gain better clarity on her identity as a biracial woman. Her work aims to explore both the mental and physical dissonance of being mixed race, how feelings of "otherness" can arise at unexpected times, and how it feels to be two cultures at once and no culture at all. Lauren is inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Faith Ringgold's story quilts, Glenn Martin Taylor's alternative kintsugi ceramics, and Chanakarn Semachai's playful ceramics.
