Summertime Sadness was installed in the Jordan Gallery in SMU’s Owen Arts Center during the Fall 2023 semester as part of the Second Year Graduate Student Showcase

Summertime Sadness

The work shown in this exhibition was all completed over the summer of 2023 as a transitional step between the research done during the first year of the SMU MFA program and where I wanted to go forward as I entered my second, and final, year of the MFA program.

This work centers around girlhood, summer camps, sleepovers, and the loss of close childhood friends. Just as I parted with my childhood friends, I then parted with this part of my research. Moving forward, the focus shifted from childhood nostalgia to my identity as a biracial/mixed-race woman. A topic that I have been avoiding for years in my work out of fear and anxiety.
